Concurring with Jim Rutz’s “spectator Christianity” premise, the organization Empower Missions stated, “Many feel that the conventional church in the 20th and 21st centuries tends to produce congregants who are spectators rather than disciples, and that the typical church is unable to significantly reach out to non-believers.” Not surprisingly, this does not work well in unevangelized societies, where missionaries found that conventional mission methods were unable to keep up with population growth.
